Controlled Demolition of Building in Reading

On Saturday, October 22, 2011 at 9 a.m. there will be a controlled demolition (a process known as “implosion”) of a six story building located at 1 Jacob Way off South Street in Reading.

Controlled Demolition Incorporated has been retained to demolish the building using a small amount of carefully placed explosives.

In advance of the building demolition, Controlled Demolition Incorporated will be conducting an isolated test blast on Thursday, October 20, 2011. This test blast will be on one building column and is important for the contractor to design his demolition plan.

The Reading Fire Department has worked with the Reading Police Department, Reading Department of Public Works, State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Massachusetts State Police to identify and address public safety concerns.

Access to the Jacob Way site will be restricted on Saturday October 22, 2011. Also, Police will be stopping traffic on Route 128, Main Street, South Street, Curtis Street and George Street, approximately 10 to 15 minutes before the building demolition. Once the building has been demolished traffic will resume.

The residents of South Street and Curtis Street are at a safe distance from the demolition. We do request these residents to stay within their homes during this event and keep their doors and windows closed to keep out any dust that might migrate off the property. The contractor has a dust control plan in place that involves removing dust generating building materials, pre-wetting of the building and specialized dust control equipment.

A building demolition is a unique event that many people would like to see in person. However, due to the location of the building and the number of trees on the property there is not a good vantage point for residents to watch the demolition. The contractor will be video taping the event and we will make this recording available to Reading Cable Television.

In an effort to inform residents of this event the Town of Reading will be using its emergency telephone notification system and the contractor will be installing message boards on Route 128, Main Street and South Street.
