Austin Prep Academic Decathlon team shines at state finals

Austin Preparatory School’s Academic Decathlon team finished 5th overall at the state competition recently.

The Reading school was the highest-scoring private/Catholic school, and second-highest of the small schools.

In individual results, Austin students earned three medals. Two of those went to sophomore Meghan Bodette of Andover. She received a bronze in Art and a silver in Language/Literature. Meghan was also the fifth-highest overall scoring competitor in the scholastic division.

Junior John Taveras of Tewksbury won a bronze medal in Music. What makes that especially impressive is that John was a late addition to the squad. He was recruited just before February vacation to fill a vacant spot in the varsity division.

The state finals team also included seniors Andrew Baker of Wilmington, Grace Ferri of Saugus, Michael Gannon of North Reading, juniors Drew Ciccarelli of Saugus, John Smolak of North Andover, Nicholas Sorabella of Stoneham, and sophomore Teresa Leahy of Stoneham. The team’s moderator is Edward MacKenzie of Littleton, history faculty.
