Balukonis Receives 3-Year Contract
New deal, effective July 1, features no salary increase in first year, reflects difficult economic climate, selectmen say.

The Board of Selectmen voted unanimously Monday night to extend Town Administrator Greg Balukonis’ contract for three years, beginning July 1.
The new deal, which the board announced after meeting in executive session for almost an hour, rewards Balukonis for the work he has done, but also recognizes the current economic climate, selectmen said.
“The terms and conditions Mr. Balukonis agreed to reflect the economic conditions the town faces,” Selectman Stephen O’Leary said. “Mr. Balukonis is doing a fine job. I thank you for your service.”

Balukonis’ new contract features several changes over the current version. There will be no salary increase for the first year, a 1 percent increase in the second year, and a 2 percent increase in the third year, said Sean Delaney, vice chairman of the Board of Selectmen.
Five weeks of vacation time will be accrued monthly instead of in a lump sum. Sick-leave accrual will be capped, but an annual sick-leave buyback and end-of-career buyback will be eliminated.

A 15 percent longevity step increase will be eliminated, Delaney said. In addition, a monthly car allowance will be converted to a town vehicle under the new contract.
Balukonis thanked each board member individually.
“I appreciate your support, and I am thrilled,” Balukonis said.
The Board of Selectmen will have a contract for Balukonis to sign at its next meeting, Chairman Robert Mauceri said.
