Catherine Jones Passes Away

Longtime Reading resident was devoted member of the First Congregational Church.

Catherine “Kitty” Jones, 90, passed away at her home in Salem, New Hampshire on Tuesday, April 17. She was formerly a longtime resident of Reading, and the wife of the late David S. Jones.

Born in Boston to the late Dionisios “Dennis” and Aggeliki “Angelina” Maravas, Kitty was raised by the late Grace and Nathan “Nat” Eaton of Wakefield. She lived with David and their family in Reading for 40 years before moving to Andover, and most recently to Greystone Farm in Salem, NH.

Prior to retirement, Kitty worked as a Registered Nurse. She spent most of her career at the former New England Memorial Hospital in Stoneham, retiring in 1990. Post-retirement, she continued to serve part-time for the Visiting Nurses Association in the Winchester area.

Kitty was devoted to the well-being of the communities in which she lived, and found multiple ways to serve those in need. She was an active and devoted member of the First Congregational Church of Reading, and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and the Reading Food Pantry. She regularly visited the elderly and homebound, and baked for church fundraisers. Kitty gave her all to those around her, and she was well-loved by her community in return.

Kitty loved exploring and experiencing her world. She was a member of the Reading Garden Club, the Purple Hat Society, and regularly traveled with Andover Senior Center’s Curmudgeon and Friends. She and David traveled extensively, particularly through Elderhostel learning programs. She shared her love of museums and theater with her family.

Kitty was predeceased by her beloved husband, David, in September of 2006. She is survived by their two sons, Stephen D. Jones of Haverhill, Kenneth A. Jones and his wife Kathryn of Plaistow, NH, and her two granddaughters, Kendra and Kaitlyn Jones, also of Plaistow, NH.

A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church, 25 Woburn St., Reading on Saturday, May 12 at 10 am. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Kitty’s memory may be made to the First Congregational Church, 25 Woburn St., Reading, MA 01867
