Coach's Corner: Kerry Sullivan

Local coach gives back to the sport she loves.

Reading Memorial High School Girls Junior Varsity basketball coach Kerry Sullivan, or "Coach Sully," started coaching to give back to the sport she feels has given her so much.

"I went into coaching for the love of the sport and wanting to give back to the game what it gave to me," Sullivan said.

Sullivan grew up in Wakefield, where she played soccer and basketball for Wakefield Memorial High School and continues her relationship with Wakefield's schools by teaching fifth grade at Galvin Middle School.

"The glory of my high school career was winning the state championship my junior year. What was so special was that no one believed we could accomplish what we did, except ourselves. We were the underdog everywhere we went and kept rising to the occasion," Sullivan said.

Sullivan went on to play Division II basketball for Saint Anselm College after walking on to the team her freshman year. She continued to step up her game until she was named team captain her junior and senior years.

This upcoming winter will be Sullivan's sixth year as Reading's Junior Varsity coach. She previously coached in Wakefield as both the Varsity soccer goalie coach, and Junior Varsity basketball coach.

As of now, she has no intention of pursuing a career in Varsity coaching, for she is happy working under Reading's Varsity coach Kim Penney.

"I'm involved with a great program with great people and coaches, so why leave a good thing?" Sullivan said.
