Today is Friday, Feb. 11. Here are five things you need to know:

  1. Another cold one: According to the National Weather Service, today will mirror Thursday, with a high temperature near 28 degrees, and wind chill values as low as 3 below zero. A west wind will be around 7-10 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph, the weather service said. There will be a chance of snow and rain showers on Saturday and Sunday, according to the forecast.
  2. Meet your representative: Have a question for your leaders on Beacon Hill? Rep. Bradley H. Jones Jr. will hold office hours today at from 1-2 p.m. Either Jones or a member of his staff will be available to speak with you. No appointments are necessary.
  3. Pothole season begins: The winter has been rough on our moods, our roofs and our backs. Now, it’s coming for your car. Potholes are everywhere. AAA Southern New England offers some tips to avoid potholes, including scanning the roadway in front of you, slowing down and releasing the brake before hitting a pothole, and watching for puddles that could hide cavernous ditches. If you do hit a pothole, check the alignment of your wheels, have a professional evaluate any strange noises or vibrations, and inspect your tires, according to AAA.
  4. Get a jump on weekend plans: If you are at a loss for things to do this weekend, check out our and column, both of which have plenty of ideas to keep the whole family busy.
  5. Mandela freed: On this date in 1990, Nelson Mandela was released from a South African prison after 27 years, according to History.com. Mandela was the leader of the movement to end South African apartheid. He was elected president of South Africa in 1994.
