Your daily digest of what's going on in North Reading.

Today is Tuesday, Feb. 15. Here are five things you need to know:

  1. Hope you didn’t get used to the warmth: Hitting 50 degrees on Monday sure was nice. Hope you enjoyed it. According to the National Weather Service, highs today only will top out around 19 degrees, with a wind chill as low as 7 below zero. Winds will be between 17-22 mph, with gusts as high as 48 mph possible, the forecast said. Expect to see temperatures rise throughout the week, topping off around 50 on Friday, the weather service said.
  2. I thought they just met last week: Yes, the Board of Selectmen did meet last Monday, and yes, they are meeting again tonight. Due to conflicts with school vacation week, the board is meeting this week instead. Selectmen will gather in Room 14 at at 7. Also meeting tonight is the Pedestrian Sidewalk Committee, which convenes in the Town Hall lunchroom at 6:30 p.m., while the Recycling Committee meets at 7:30 p.m. in the Town Hall lunchroom.
  3. Help out the library: The Youth Advisory Board meets today from 3-4 p.m. The Youth Advisory Board is open to all students in grades six through 12. Board members help choose books, CDs and DVDs, and organize programs and special events.
  4. Gas prices hold steady: The good news for consumers, according to AAA Southern New England, is that gas prices remain unchanged in Massachusetts since last week. The average price of a gallon of regular, unleaded self-serve gas in Massachusetts remains at $3.11, according to AAA. According to GasBuddy.com, on Main Street offers a gallon of regular unleaded for $3.09, which is the cheapest price in North Reading.
  5. Remember the Maine: On this date in 1898, the USS Maine exploded off the shores of Havana, Cuba, killing 260 sailors, according to History.com. At the time, military officials ruled that a mine caused the explosion, and the ensuing diplomatic crisis helped contribute to the start of the Spanish-American War that spring.
