Freda Doherty Passes Away

Lifelong Reading resident watched town go from horse and buggy to electric vehicles.

Freda (Koptuck) Doherty, 99, passed away peacefully in the early morning on Tuesday, April 24th. A life long resident of Reading, she witnessed the community go from horse and buggy to electric vehicles.

Beloved wife of the late Adrian F. Doherty. Devoted mother of Paul Doherty, John Doherty and Patricia "Patty" Doherty-Johanson and her husband Bob Johanson. Loving sister of Anthony "Ed" Koptuck and his wife Marge and the late Blanche Koptuck, who passed away in February of 2015. Loving and fun grandmother of Jill Hriniak Stevenson and her husband Christopher. Cherished great grandmother of Elle, Eric and Chloe.

Freda loved the Springtime, when she could plant her favorite flowers and vegetables. She loved drawing and painting landscapes wherever she found them, especially coastal views. Freda was one of many during the 1960s and 70s that made puppets to cheer up infants and young children leaving Winchester Hospital. Later she was one of the Friends of Reading Library. She loved all sports, but particularly baseball and anything her children were playing. She drove her kids to every practice and event. Freda was one who often found good humor in the mundane and would easily bring a smile or good laugh to anyone close by. Loyal to a fault, she was a true friend and will truly be missed.
