High School Football Players of the Week

The first weekend of the playoffs produced plenty of heroes.

One week of playoffs down and we already have plenty of heroes. Here's some of the best performances from the past weekend.

E.J. Perry, Andover — Is there any doubt the Andover quarterback is the Massachusetts Player of the Year? In a 54-48 overtime win over Lexington, Perry threw for five touchdown passes and ran for three more, including the winning score on a 8-yard run. He also batted down Lexington's last-ditch end zone pass. With the five TD passes, Perry has 33 for the season and 100 for his career.

Sal Frelick, Lexington — Not surprisingly, Lexington's junior quarterback had a pretty good game himself. In the loss to Andover, Frelick threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more, finishing with almost 300 yards of total offense.

Christian Sanfilippo, Gloucester — The senior back carried the Fishermen to an 18-6 win over Melrose, running for 204 yards and two touchdowns on 36 carries. Gloucester will travel to top-seed and Northeastern Conference rival Marblehead for the Division 2A North semifinals.

Phil Lashley, Silver Lake — The Lakers won their first post-season football game since 1980 thanks to their junior running back (and a missed 29-yard field goal with four seconds left). Lashley ran for 156 yards and two touchdowns in the 28-26 win over Scituate. The Lakers' last playoff appearance was a 21-3 win over Somerset in the 1980 Division 3 Super Bowl. Silver Lake will face host Westwood in the Division 2A South semifinals.

Shawn Noel, Bridgewater-Raynham — The Trojans senior back ran for 120 yards and three touchdowns in a 35-6 win over Natick. Next up is a semifinal matchup against the best team in the Bay State Conference, undefeated Wellesley.

Sal Lupoli, Chelmsford — Junior Sal Lupoli led the Lions to a 25-14 win over Revere, running for 257 yards on 34 carries and scored three touchdowns. Next up for Chelmsford is a visit to Reading for the Division 1A North semifinals.

Drew Galley, Marblehead — The senior quarterback threw two touchdown passes as the Magicians advanced to the Division 2A North semifinals with an easy 35-0 win over Wayland. The win sets up a rematch of last year's Division 3 Northeast semifinal against Gloucester, where Marblehead blanked the Fishermen, 27-0.

Steve Silvia, Dighton-Rehoboth — The junior quarterback was a standout on both sides of the ball as the Falcons handed Old Rochester its first loss of the season, 27-0. On offense he ran for 80 yards and a touchdown. On defense he recovered a fumble and had an interception. D-R lost a regular season game with ORR, 19-9, but won when it mattered most and advanced to the semifinals.

Bryce Latosek, Millis — In a 42-7 win over Sacred Heart, Latosek completed 8 passes, four that went for touchdowns. He finished with 258 yards through the air.

Tom O'Brien, Brockton — This may be the first time a quarterback was a Player of the Week after throwing for just 90 yards. But after Boxers' starter Matt Caruso went down with a broken collarbone in the first quarter, O'Brien came in and calmly led Brockton to a 38-9 win over Newton North. Despite little practice time, O'Brien passed for one touchdown while completing 4 of 6 throws, and ran for another.

Grant Chryssicas, Wellesley — The Raiders senior back ran for 290 yards and three touchdowns in a 43-22 win over Hingham in a Division 1A South contest. Next up for Wellesley is a matchup with Bridgewater-Raynham.

Bret Edwards, Central Catholic — The junior quarterback threw three touchdown passes and ran for two others as the Red Raiders cruised past Central Catholic, 47-22. Next up for Central is a rematch of last year's Division 1 North semifinal with Everett.

Noah Freedman, Peabody — In the Tanners 35-19 win over Westford, the junior running back carried 25 times for 116 yards and two touchdowns.

Johnny Jones, Beverly — Defense was the name of the game for the Panthers in a 35-10 win over Somerville in Division 2 North. Senior cornerback Johnny Jones led the way with two interceptions and 10 tackles as Beverly advanced to a semifinal matchup with top-seeded Tewksbury.

Jay Connolly, Tewksbury — The Redmen's quarterback completed just four passes but three went for touchdowns in a 59-24 win over Medford. Top-seeded Tewksbury hosts Beverly in the Division 2 North semifinals.
