Do you have an inventory of what is in your home? It could be one of the best things you ever did if your home were to catch on fire or be broken into. Having a home inventory can allow for you to conveniently have a list of everything you own (especially the valuables) when you need it most. If you have to replace all of your personal items, it would be the best way for you to do that without having to rack your brain in an already stressful time.
A home inventory can be done through photos, video, or simply a paper and pen. Why else should you have a home inventory? It can help you make sure you have the right (and enough) coverage with your current home insurance. Making a home inventory, you may come across specialty items such as jewelry or antiques that would be best insured with specialty insurance or by scheduling them onto your policy.
When you are making a home inventory, you may also get a better idea of just how much value overall you have in your home with your current personal possessions. Once you do this, you will be able to have a more informed discussion with your insurance agent about your coverage and limits. It may seem tedious now, but there are several ways that having a home inventory can come in handy for you, your family, and your home insurance.
