'Hound Dogs' Attend Annual Popsicle Social
Principal Glen McKay and teachers Cathie Grant and Debbie Reynolds welcomed kindergarten children to the Hood School.
Kindergarten is a big milestone in a child's life and a major event for parents, too. The helps new students and their families make the transition with a Popsicle Social held every year at the school's playground.
"It's a way to have the kids meet each other, and informally introduce the parents to the teachers and the other parents. We've been doing it for years. It works out well," explained Principal Glen McKay as he talked with parents and children handing them the official J. T. Hood Elementary "Hound Dog" sticker. "The social-emotional development of children is fundamental and we consider that in everything we do."
Children played while mothers interacted with each other and looked on. Some mothers confessed to having mixed emotions about sending their child off to school.

"We're excited," said Ann Eng. "But I'll probably be crying at the bus stop. We have friends whose children attend here so we know it's a great school with great teachers."
Even though she has confidence in the school and her child, Eng still has mixed feelings.

"There's just a moment when you realize your child is starting to explore the bigger world out there without you," she said.
All the children who were asked said they were excited about going to school, naming books, music and recess as some of the things they are looking forward to.
"I can't wait," said Brandon Eng. "We do finger painting at home and I think we will do more painting at school!"
Jessica Simone was one of several children who said they are looking forward to lunch. Her mother explained why.
"There is a TV show popular with many kids," said Simone. "It shows older children at school during lunch. It's all about social interactions. That really grabs their attention. But judging from pre-school I'd say they like learning, too!"
Approximately 20 students are enrolled in the full-day program while the half-day program welcomes an equal number.
"We also hold two days of orientation," said McKay. "Each parent is scheduled for a meeting with their child and the child's teacher. We like this practice. It helps everyone get better aquainted and answers the questions families have at this point."
