Last Call For Reading's Zinga

Frozen Yogurt shop to close Wednesday on its fifth anniversary in town.

It's not the way owner Jerry Pothier envisioned celebrating his anniversary selling frozen yogurt on Haven Street. But Wednesday is not only Zinga's fifth anniversary, it's also the end. Zinga will close Wednesday, joining Portland Pie and The Butcher Shop as the ghosts of Haven.

Was it the increased competition, higher rent, or the closing of Portland Pie that did in Zinga? It was all of the above, and simple economics.

"The reason why we're closing is that our five-year lease has come to an end and we had felt that our overhead was high and the new lease wasn't any better," said Pothier, who shared ownership with Caitlin Merullo and Camille Bardaro. "So at that point as a business we decided the best thing to do is to close the store and move forward with our lives.

"I want to say thank you to all the residents of Reading for supporting us for the past five years. We're sorry that we have to close. We just feel at this point that it's better for us economically to let the company go. Again, thank you. We appreciate everything you've given to us and we hope we've been good to you guys."
