MBTA Chugs Into Reading To Explain Suspension of Weekend Trains
Public hearing Tuesday to discuss plan to stop weekend service between Sept. 23 and Dec. 2 to install safety system.

MBTA officials are coming to Reading Tuesday, Sept. 12, to discuss plans to stop weekend train service into Boston starting Sept. 23.
The public meeting will be held at the Library's Community Room A and begins at 6:30 p.m.
The weekend stoppage is so the MBTA can install a new train safety control system on the Haverhill Commuter Rail Line. This is a federally-mandated upgrade that will prevent human error, and reduce train collisions and derailments.

To effectively meet deadlines required by the Federal Railroad Administration the MBTA must shutdown weekend service beginning Sept. 23. Service is expected to resume after Dec. 2. Until service is resumed, the MBTA will use bus shuttles to transport riders Saturdays and Sundays on the Haverhill Line to Oak Grove.
