Catch a Medea Performance At the High School

The Masquers are performing Medea at North Reading High School.

Escape into the dramatic world of Greek tragedy on Friday or Saturday evening during the play Medea at the . Medea will be put on by the Masquers Club, which has about 100 members.

Only 14 of those members will be on stage, including Janelle Yull who plays Medea. The rest work behind the scenes to make the play a success. Julie Landy is the stage manager and Adam Sperry designed about 20 costumes for the play. The tech crew manages the set design, lighting and props. Rehearsals for Medea started in September.

The classic play was written by Euripides and translated by Robinson Jeffers. Medea is a symbolic figure at war with herself. The set design is black and white, symbolizing good and evil. Mobile poppies on set follow the mood of the play and of Medea.

Director of the play Allison Kane has been teaching music and theater at the high school for six years. She is a former actress herself having performed in New York.

“We have a younger group this year. They need to feel the movement of the play,” Kane said. She encourages actors to think outside the box and wants them to completely understand the complex play.

After their performance this week the Masquers will take a break and resume their work again in February. At that time they will perform a shortened version of Medea for the Massachusetts Education Theater Guild. The Masquers have made the semi-finals in previous Theater Guild festivals.

The Masquers have done a great job keeping theater alive in North Reading. Improvements to the actual theater, including updated lights, sound systems and electrical work were made possible through their extensive fundraising efforts.
