Police Log: Youthful Resident Arrested for Second OUI

Notable entries from the Friday and Saturday, Jan. 6 and 7, police log.

Youthful Resident Arrested for Second OUI

Jan. 7: 11:21 p.m.—A traffic stop on Charles Street yielded an OUI arrest, as Zachary T. Bates, 18, of Reading, was arrested for operating under the influence of alcohol—second offense, operating after revocation for alcohol, marked lanes violation and giving a false name to police. The suspect refused a breathalyzer test, and was held on $340 bail.

Friday, Jan. 6

8:24 a.m.—Police investigated a two-car motor vehicle crash on Main Street with no injuries reported.

8:56 a.m.—Wakefield police alerted Reading to a suspect in a recent home invasion who had fled into Reading. Officers located the vehicle in question—empty—on Salem Street. Units from Reading, Wakefield and the Mass. State Police eventually located and arrested the man, Brett R. Steenbreuggen, 27, of Reading, at Stop & Shop on Walker’s Brook Drive.

12:09 p.m.—Police responded to a reports of a threat being made by a Main Street man. Officers learned that the dispute was over a cat, which one party had given the other and now wanted back.

4:19 p.m.—Police responded to the Joshua Eaton Elementary School for reports of youths gathering, and possibly holding string across the roadway. Officers arrived at the scene but the group was gone.

5:41p.m.—A motor vehicle stop at Salem and Spring Streets yielded three by-law citations, as Oliver Ames, 21, Jolynn Silva, 20 and John DeMichaelis, 21, all of Reading, were cited for possession of Marijuana, less than one ounce.

10:55 p.m.—Police responded to Harrison and Salem Streets for reports of youths stringing duct tape across the road. Police arrived, but the youths—and the tape—were already gone.

Saturday, Jan. 7

7:45 a.m.—Police received a report of a man at Cumberland Farms asking patrons for rides. Officers responded, but were unable to locate the man. A second call, stating that a man of similar description was walking down Route 128 north, was forwarded to State Police in Danvers.

10:10 a.m.—An unwanted guest at The Chocolate Truffle, in downtown Reading, brought police to the store, and the man in question agreed to move along.

1:37 p.m.—A caller reported a suspicious silver SUV at Whitehall Lane and Avalon Road, and indicated they thought it may be drug activity. Police responded but the vehicle was gone.

3:08 p.m.—Police investigated an accident in the parking lot of Market Basket on General Way involving a parked car.

7:12 p.m.—Another call involving youths placing things across the road was received, this time at Harrison and Orange Streets. Police responded and removed some tape that was strung across the road. The youths were unable to be located.

7:30 p.m.—Police received a report of a dark sedan at Eastway Street and Dean Road with several youths inside—possibly drinking. Officers located the vehicle, but it was empty.

8:08 p.m.—A motor vehicle stop at Main and Green Streets netted a by-law citation against a Reading resident. Michael Lepore, 22, of Reading, was cited for possession of a Class D substance, less than one ounce.

10:47 p.m.—Police received a report of a vehicle driving the wrong way around the Salem Street rotary. Officers checked the area and were unable to locate the vehicle.
