POLL: Do You Support the New School Building Project?

North Reading needs a new middle/high school to meet state requirements.

The high school and middle school need updates to meet state requirements. If you don't know what the conditions are like, here's a video produced by SSBC for a first-hand look at the current schools.

According to Don Kelliher of the Finance Committee, the cost of repairing the buildings and replacing worn out systems would be $47 million. That cost does not include any classrooms or science labs, playing fields, a gymnasium or upgrades in technology. Not too mention that the state would not reimburse the town for any of the costs.

The state will reimburse the town for half of the building project. Therefore, the town would get a brand new facility with state of the art technology for about the same cost.

Kelliher of the Finance Committee said the estimated cost of the project is $105-110 million, and the state will reimburse the town 51.54 percent or approximately $50 million. That leaves the town with a bill of $55-60 million, just a bit more than the $47 million it would cost to fix the current schools.

Either way, the schools have to be repaired. So which option do you support? $47 million for the band-aid fix, or $55-60 million for an entirely new high school and renovated middle school with a new gymnasium, theatre and music space, library/media center, science labs, technology and more?
