Reading and North Reading Athletes Fill WPI Rosters

Austin Prep graduate Kyle Havey leads talented group of local athletes playing for Engineers.

Worcester Poly Tech didn't have to look far to find some talented athletes.

The Engineers fall rosters are dotted with student-athletes from Reading and North Reading.

North Reading resident and Austin Prep graduate Kyle Havey is a defensive back for the WPI football team. The 6-2, 215-pound junior has played in 21 games in his first two years in Worcester. In addition to Havey, Austin Prep graduate and Burlington resident Greg Kaleshian will begin his freshman year playing linebacker.

Fresh off back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in nearly 25 seasons, the Engineers begin conference play in the NEWMAC, continuing league rivalries with Springfield and Merchant Martine, renewing league ties with Coast Guard and Norwich and forging new gridiron matchups with MIT, Maine Maritime and Catholic.

WPI, which was picked third in the inaugural coaches poll, hosts Anna Maria Friday night and heads to Springfield to begin it's first NEWMAC slate, following several years in the Liberty League, on Sept. 23.

North Reading's Jill Comeau has earned a spot on the WPI women's soccer team. The sophomore midfielder played five games for WPI. WPI (16-2-3) is coming off a banner year that featured the program-record for wins in a season, the NEWMAC regular-season and tournament titles and the program's first NCAA Tournament berth. The Engineers, who are predicted to repeat as NEWMAC Champions by the conference head coaches, begin their campaign Friday at Salem State and return home for an evening meeting with UMass Dartmouth on Sunday.

Two Reading residents are on the WPI men's soccer team, Jackson Conroy and Kevin Krupa. Conroy is a sophomore midfielder while Krupa is a freshman back.

The Engineers, who are predicted to place sixth in the competitive NEWMAC, opens the season Friday afternoon versus Worcester State at home. Last year's lineup Men's Soccer posted a 9-4-4 record overall for the program's sixth consecutive winning season for the then-fourth-year head coach Brian Kelley.
