Reading Police Arrest Cambridge Man for Larceny

Reading Police Chief Mark D. Segalla and Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said Friday that Sean Mullen, 38, of Cambridge was arraigned in Woburn District Court and charged with larceny over $250 in connection with an alleged $50,000 theft from a Reading restaurant. He was arrested by the Reading Police Department yesterday in connection with an alleged ongoing larceny scheme.

In January, Reading Police began an investigation into a report of a long-time larceny, totaling more than $50,000 from a local business where Mullen was formerly employed.

The defendant allegedly engaged in a scheme by taking 673 cash transactions and voiding them, then changing the restaurant’s computer records to show that the voided cash transactions had instead been made by restaurant gift cards. The defendant then allegedly took the cash from the restaurant’s safe. The defendant also allegedly took $640 collected by restaurant employees for charity from the safe.

Following his termination, the defendant allegedly returned to the restaurant after it had closed and took items including a ladder, Christmas lights and extension cords.

After an extensive investigation and several attempts to contact him, Reading Police obtained an arrest warrant for Mullen. With the assistance of the Cambridge Police Department, he was arrested on Thursday without incident at his apartment.

Judge Timothy Gailey set bail at $250 cash and ordered the defendant to stay away from witnesses and from the location of the alleged offense. The next court date in this matter is May 9.
