Reading Police, County Sheriff Warn Public of Arrest Scam

A telephone scam has been making the rounds and occurred in Reading on Thursday.

Reading Police Chief James Cormier and Middlesex Sheriff Peter Koutoujian are warning the public about a scam that is making the rounds and recently struck in Reading.

According to a press release, perpetrators claiming to be law enforcement officials have been calling victims and threatening arrest over the payment of fictional debts.

On Thursday, a medical professional in Reading received a phone call from a man claiming to be a Middlesex County deputy and wanting to talk about an IRS debt. The victim recognized the call as a scam and did not reveal any personal or financial information before contacting police.

“Unfortunately, these scammers are very sophisticated and will use technology and emotions to their advantage,” said Cormier in the press release. “If something doesn’t feel right, call your local police department and request their assistance and do not under any circumstances give out personal financial information over the telephone. No reputable company or government agency will elicit this type of information or payment over the phone.”

The caller on Thursday spoofed a Middlesex Sheriff’s Office number, which made the the call appear legitimate on the victim’s Caller ID.

“No legitimate law enforcement agency will ever threaten arrest over the phone,” said Koutoujian in the press release. “Nor will they demand payment for debt over the phone.”
