Call on Reading to perform an independent audit to measure all gas leaks

The Green Sanctuary, the Climate Justice Group of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Reading, is running a Gas Leaks Campaign.

They seek to educate Reading's citizens, government, and staff about the dangers of natural gas leaks, particularly large volume leaks. These dangers include exacerbation of respiratory illness, killing of trees, and release of the powerful greenhouse gas, methane. If you smell gas, call 911 and the National Grid emergency number: 800-233-5325.
Reading has over 130 identified gas leaks, some over 20 years old. New leaks emerge regularly, as the Massachusetts gas infrastructure is the second oldest in the nation. National Grid has no incentive to locate the large volume leaks because we, the consumers, pay for the lost gas. The group asks residents to call on Reading to perform an independent audit to measure all gas leaks and then work with National Grid to prioritize and repair those that are the largest and most harmful.

Further information will be available at their booth at the Reading Street Fair, Saturday Sept 8.
