Sandra Gray Passes Away

Longtime Reading resident was Past-President of the League of Women Voters in Reading.

Sandra E. (Corey) Gray, 80, a longtime resident of Reading, passed away at home on Sunday evening, Sept. 9.

She was the wife of the late Robert A. Gray who died in 1990.

Born in Brockton and raised in Randolph, she was the daughter of the late Leo, and the late Madeleine Corey. Sandra was a graduate of Stetson High School in Randolph, and Bridgewater State College. Sandra taught 6th grade at the former Highland School in Reading, retiring from teaching in 1961 to raise her family.

Throughout the years, she assisted in the running of her husband’s business, Cushman & Marden, Inc., a textile company in Peabody. Upon Robert’s death in 1990, Sandra continued ownership and operation of the company until her retirement. Sandra was Past-President of the League of Women Voters in Reading; a member of the Stoneham Rotary Club; and she was a member of the Meadowbrook Golf Club in Reading. Sandra was also an active member of the First Congregational Church in Reading.

Sandra is survived by four sons, Robert R. Gray of Reading, Kevin A. Gray and his wife Jean of Londonderry, NH, David E. Gray and his wife Patricia of Reading, and Michael T. Gray and his girlfriend Amy Sharp of Woburn; and she is survived by her daughter in law, Catherine Horan of Reading. She is also the grandmother of Alyssa, Alex, Andrew, Catherine, Aaron, Thomas, Joshua, Elizabeth, Madeleine, and the late Jack; and great grandmother of Rylan. Sandra was the sister of Richard Corey and his wife Judy of Rye, NH, Wanda Stoebel of Methuen, the late Robert Corey and his wife Adele of Pocasset, the late Carolyn Smith and her husband the late Augustus, and the late Diane Corey. Sandra is also survived by her close friend, Linda Cefalo of Methuen and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at the First Congregational Church, 25 Woburn St., Reading, on Friday, Sept. 14 at 10 am. Visiting hours will be at the Douglass, Edgerley & Bessom Funeral Home, 25 Sanborn St., Reading on Thursday from 4-8 pm. Burial will be at the Forest Glen Cemetery in Reading. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Sandra’s memory may be made to Middlesex-East Visiting Nurse Hospice, c/o Gift Processing Center, 41 Mall Rd., Burlington, MA 01805.
