Fun and Educational Escapes At the Library

The Flint Memorial Library provides events and workshops that are free and convenient.

These days, so many need to watch their pennies. If you need a break, but are watching your budget, the offers a number of free activities ranging from books clubs to music performances to arts and crafts.

For artists and art lovers, check out the artists receptions, the first being today Thursday, October 20. Myth Magic Mystery will display compositions from local artists, including images captured in the library’s Photo Walk. The jazz trio, The Joy of Sax, will accompany the exhibit with piano, bass, saxophone and clarinet. Future receptions include, photos of Alaska, by Meg Robertson and watercolor images of 9/11 by Fran Nola.

For readers, the library hosts two ongoing book groups one that meets the last Wednesday of the month at 10:00 a.m., and an evening drop-in book club the first Tuesday of every month at 7:00 p.m. This year’s titles will include An Irish Country Doctor by Patrick Taylor, Profiles in Courage, by John F. Kennedy, South of Broad by Pat Conroy and Expecting Adam by Martha Beck.

For crafters
, the ongoing Needle Arts Craft Group welcomes all who knit, crochet and embroider to share patterns and tips. The next group meets on October 27 at 7:00 p.m.

For writers, the library is participating in National Novel Writers Month (NaNoWriterMO), a nationally-organized, write-off that challenges ambitious writers to crank out a 175-page novel this November. If memoir is your medium, North Reading author Nancy Parsons will present Feeding Fiction – Using Your Memories to Nurture a Novel, offering tips and inspiration on Thursday, October 27.
