Washington Irving Student Charged with Assaulting Police Officer in School

A male student was arrested on charges of being a disorderly person and assault and battery on a police officer, after several Washington Irving Middle School staff members warned the boy to not damage school property.

Around 10:50 a.m. on Sept. 24, a Boston School Police officer assigned to the school was speaking with administrators, noticed the male student slamming a door into a wall in the hall next to the cafeteria. The officer approached the boy, and saw him standing against a wall banging a chair/desk combo against a pipe in the classroom he was in. A counselor at the school was able to get the chair/desk away from the student. The boy then turned and started to kicking the pipe and refused to stop kicking the pipe as directed by two staff members. There were two other adults witnessing the incident, according to a Boston Police report.

The officer then stepped in and took hold of the student by both arms near his elbows and guided him away from the wall and pipe. As the officer stopped to speak to the boy, the boy put his foot on top of the officer's foot. The officer told the boy he needs to follow directions from school staff. The officer told the boy to remove his foot from atop the officer's foot, according to a police report. The boy then allegedly lifted his right foot quickl and tried to stomp on the officer's foot. The officer moved his foot to avoid getting stomped on, and the officer took the boy to the floor, at which time a short scuffle ensued.
