SALEM, MA — A massive outpouring of sympathy and paying of respect is expected across the North Shore over the next couple of days as police, fire and emergency crews travel from throughout the region for the services of State Trooper Kevin Trainor, who was killed in a Route 1 wrong-way crash in the early morning hours of last Wednesday.

Visiting hours are planned for Conway-Cahill Brodeur Funeral Home at 82 Lynn Street in Peabody from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, with a funeral service set for St. James Church in Trainor's hometown of Salem on Wednesday morning.

Salem police said road closures in the area of the Federal Street church will begin at 8 a.m. on Wednesday and will continue throughout the morning.

"Parking and moving through the area will be challenging and limited at that time," Salem police said. "Members of the public who wish to pay their respects as a part of the processional are asked to do so by lining Boston Street west of Bridge Street toward Peabody."

Police said those wishing to line the streets for the procession should plan to begin assembling in place by 9:45 a.m.

"Please be advised that a rifle salute and a helicopter flyover are planned as a part of the ceremonies," Salem police said. "Memorial services are anticipated to conclude well before the evening commute, and closed roads will be reopened accordingly."

Peabody police said that on Tuesday from noon to 7 p.m. Lynn Street from Washington Street to County Street will be closed to all traffic with police details assigned to assist with detours.

No parking will be allowed on either side of the following streets from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.: Lynn St from Washington to County St, Rainbow Road, Rainbow Circle, Pumping Station Road, Cedar Grove Ave, Carlton St, Brown St, Margaret Rd, and Tucker's Court.

"These streets will be used for staging and other essential public safety operations," Peabody police said.

The South Peabody Branch Library will close at noon for the remainder of the day.

"We appreciate your cooperation as our community comes together to honor the life and service of Trooper Trainor and to respect our brothers and sisters at the Massachusetts State Police," Peabody police said.

Trainor was hailed as a "hero" whose courageous act to intercept a wrong-way driver on Route 1 following his shift at 2 a.m. "saved lives."

The 30-year-old Trainor was born in Beverly and grew up in Salem. He graduated from Salem High School in 2013 and Salem State University in 2019 with a Bachelor's Degree in criminal justice.

Much of his family still lives in Salem, and several family members work in public service for EMS and fire services.

Trainor worked in the Essex County Sheriff's Department as a corrections officer at the Middleton Jail and House of Correction before he became part of the 88th Recruit Training Troop of the State Police Academy in 2023.

He served in the MSP for three years before his death.

Trainor was living in Georgetown with his fiancée, Jessica Ostrowski.

The Essex County District Attorney's Office said the crash happened shortly after 2 a.m. on May 6 as Trainor responded to the report of a wrong-way driver following the end of his shift.

Hernan Marrero, 50, of Roslindale, who was killed in the crash and pronounced dead at the scene, was the other driver whose Jeep crashed into Trainor's police SUV.
