Participants may send in up to three photos in each of three categories: Salem Through Time, Hidden Salem and Your City.

The contest is intended to highlight preservation, overlooked details, and personal connections to Salem.

The Salem Through Time category centers on images that place old and new side by side, including historic buildings in everyday use and scenes that show how the city has changed while keeping its character.

Hidden Salem is focused on close-up architectural details, textures and smaller discoveries such as doorways, ironwork, inscriptions, materials and quiet corners.

Your City is described as an open theme that invites photographers to show what Salem means to them through people, places, memories, routines or emotions.

Agroup of volunteer judges will select a first-, second- and third-place winner in each category.

A Grand Prize winner will also be chosen from all entries.

The remaining photos will move into a People's Choice competition on social media. Prizes will be awarded to the winners.

Winning photographs will be revealed at HSI's annual Preservation Awards and Historic House Resource Expo on Sept 19 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Salem High School.
