Salem Honors City's Oldest Living Resident On 104th Birthday

SALEM, MA — Salem is honoring Mary Cardillo, the city's oldest living resident, as she celebrates her 104th birthday.

The city recognized Cardillo for 104 years of life, memories and community, along with a long record of giving back in Salem.

Cardillo served at the GE Factory during World War II. She also helped welcome the first visitors to Salem's Haunted Happenings while working as the receptionist for the Salem Chamber of Commerce, linking her story to two well-known parts of the city's history.

Earlier this year, Mayor Dominick Pangallo declared Mary Cardillo Day in the city. The recognition brought together friends, family, generations of the Cardillo family and community members to mark what the city called her remarkable life and lasting impact.

"Here's to you, Mary!" the city said in announcing her 104th birthday. "A life defined by humor, compassion, friendship and an endless spirit of giving back!"
