Salem 400+ Sculpture 'Traces of Arrival' Dedication Thursday

SALEM, MA — Salem will dedicate a new public art installation near the Salem Ferry Terminal at 10 Blaney St. on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

The project, called Traces of Arrival, is part of the city's Salem 400+ quadricentennial celebrations and was developed in partnership with the Salem Public Art Commission.

The public is invited to attend the dedication of the installation described as "a significant addition to Salem's public art landscape."

It is intended to serve as "a lasting tribute to the city's past, present, and future" as part of the Salem 400+ celebration.

Earlier this year, the city and the Public Art Commission sought proposals for a signature sculpture tied to Salem 400+. Artists were asked to create works connected to the city's quadricentennial while also recognizing Salem's Indigenous roots, layered histories and cultural life.

The selected work, Traces of Arrival by Seattle-based artist Roark T. Congdon, draws from historic navigation charts and spatial systems used to understand Salem Harbor and its maritime connections. The sculpture turns those cartographic forms into a three-dimensional structure meant to express movement, orientation and arrival within the harbor landscape.

Indigenous pathways, colonial expansion and global trade routes are represented through intersecting planes of weathering steel gathered around a shared center.
