SALEM, MA — Salem will host its annual Veterans Day ceremony on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Salem High School auditorium.
The city said this year's event will honor and recognize Capt. Walter C. O'Neil. O'Neil is a recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross — second only to the Medal of Honor in the U.S. military.
The Distinguished Service Cross was awarded to Lt. O'Neil for extraordinary heroism in action against Japanese forces on the Aleutian Island of Attu.
Mayor Dominick Pangallo and the Salem Veterans Council invite all veterans, family and friends to attend the event and learn more about Lt. O'Neil's service.
A gathering will follow immediately after the ceremony at VFW Post 1524, 95 Derby Street, Salem.
