Salem Student Remembered Tonight
The fifth-grader was honored last year for his heroic effort to save a man. Now the community is mourning him.

SALEM, MA – The 10-year-old boy struck and killed Friday night by a Commuter Rail train has been identified as Jaydon Dancy, officials announced.
The boy, a fifth-grader at the Carlton Innovation School in Salem, was honored last year for pulling a kayaker in distress to the shore, the Salem News reported. The man that Dancy pulled to shore didn't survive, but Dancy was honored by officials for his heroic attempt.
Now the community is mourning Dancy, who was killed by a Rockport/Newbury Line train around 8 p.m. Transit authorities said it appeared Dancy was on the inbound track at the time.

"Our community has suffered a tragic loss with the death of Jaydon Dancy, a student at the Carlton Innovation School who was accidentally killed on Friday," a statement from Salem Public Schools reads.
The school will be hosting a community meeting Sunday night from 6-8 p.m. to grieve together. Grief counsellors will be on hand, as they will all week at school.

"There is no more profoundly sorrowful event than the accidental death of a child," Salem Mayor Kim Driscoll wrote on Facebook.
"There are no adequate words to aptly convey the utter tragic event this is," Transit Police said in a statement.
