'Charlotte's Little Salem' Free Show Coming To Salem Armory

The show will highlight the contributions of Charlotte Forten - the first Black woman to teach in an integrated classroom.

SALEM, MA — The spirit and contributions of Charlotte Forten — the first Black woman to teach in an integrated classroom — will be celebrated during a free show at the Salem Armory Regional Visitor Center during school vacation week.

The Essex National Heritage Commission and History Alive, Inc. will present the show called "Charlotte's Little Salem" on Feb. 22 at 11 a.m.

Children who attend will be invited to attend the Salem abolitionist, writer and educator for a special craft time with clay, wood and coloring materials. Children and their caregivers will contribute to building a 3D miniature "city of gratitude for the freedoms and comforts long fought for during Charlotte's lifetime."

The show is designed to inspire the participants with the writings dear to Forten as she grew from a schoolgirl to school teacher.

All ages are welcome to the event is recommended for kids 7 years old and older.
