Conservation Commission to Consider Improvements to Forest River Conservation Area
A public meeting will take place on Thursday, November 12, 6:30 p.m.,at 120 Washington Street in the third floor conference room.

Supported with Community Preservation funds, the Salem Conservation Commission has commissioned a study by Kyle Zick Landscape Architecture (KZLA) to evaluate the condition of trails, footbridges, and signage and to prioritize improvements to the Forest River Conservation Area. Visitors enjoy the Forest River Conservation Area by means of trails and footbridges maintained through the generous efforts of local volunteers. However, some trail segments drain poorly and become impassable during wet weather, and the footbridges often require more intensive upkeep than volunteers can provide.
Kyle will discuss his findings at the November 12 Conservation Commission meeting and seek input from the community regarding proposed improvements.
“Volunteers have done great work maintaining the Forest River Conservation Area without a dedicated funding source,” said Mayor Kim Driscoll. “However, the availability of Community Preservation Act funds for this study will better position the City to secure grants to design and implement improvements in order to enhance the use of this beautiful natural area and open space.”

While the North River was narrowed and rerouted in the 19th century to carry waste from the factories built along its banks and the South River was covered and replaced with underground culverts, much of the Forest River and its surrounding 100 acres of salt marsh and woodlands are preserved, representing a significant open space asset for the community.
The presentation is hosted by the Salem Conservation Commission and will take place Thursday, November 12 at 6:30 p.m.at the City Hall Annex, 3rd floor conference room at 120 Washington Street. All are encouraged to attend and participate.
