The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention posted yesterday a warning to consumers, retailers, and restaurants regarding the risk of listeria associated with packaged salads produced at the Dole facility in Springfield, Ohio. One person has died and twelve others have been hospitalized due to complications. The Federal Drug Administration issued a recall this weekend.

To find out if the packaged salad stored in your fridge might be contaminated, check the manufacturer code as presented in the picture above. If the code starts with the letter A, throw away your packaged salad immediately.

Listeria infection can cause diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever, headaches, and nausea. Infants, pregnant women, and elders are more at risk of developing a serious illness requiring hospitalization.
