Enrollment Drop Forces Salem State Hiring Freeze
Enrollment was down 5% as of May 1, prompting the freeze.

SALEM, MA -- Salem State University will not fill any open positions funded by tuition or state money as part of a hiring freeze that went into effect Tuesday. In a letter to students, faculty and staff, Salem State President John Keenan attributed the freeze to a 5% decline in enrollment. The freeze does not affect open positions funded by grants or self-sustaining operations, such as residence hall staff.
According to the Salem News, which first reported this story, the freeze automatically suspends any ongoing faculty searches, which could impact classroom experiences for students. The University said it is seeing fewer returning students as the job market improves.
