Historic Salem, Inc. Annual Meeting and Reception

Historic Salem, Inc. will hold its Annual Meeting on Wednesday, May 3, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. at the Salem Maritime National Park Service Visitor Center. The organization will present the 2012 Preservation Awards, and host Sidney E. Berger, the Ann C. Pingree Director of the Phillips Library of the Peabody Essex Museum who will present a lecture on the past, present, and future of the Phillips Library. 

 

The Preservation Awards are granted by Historic Salem, Inc. on an annual basis to a variety of businesses, organizations, collections, and private homes who have demonstrated a passion for historic preservation in Salem. This year’s slate of nominees has been presented by members of the Salem community and includes a variety of projects.

Sidney Berger has been the Ann C. Pingree Director of the Phillips Library since 2007 and holds a professorship with Simmons College in the Library Sciences Department.  He holds degrees from the University of California at Berkley, the University of Illinois, the University of Iowa. His career is diverse in teaching, museum studies, and publications. Mr. Berger will speak about the centuries of collecting books, manuscripts, ephemera of all kinds, and photographs—amassing a research collection that equals over 400,000 volumes in the library, more than a mile of shelves of manuscripts, a million photographs, and a massive amount of other materials, all available to scholars. Besides a look at the highlights of the collection, the present construction project and the future of access will also be discussed.

Current members are invited to come, meet the new Board members, and enjoy the special lecture as a thank you for your support. Others from the community are invited to hear about current activities and consider membership as a way to support Historic Salem Inc.’s mission to preserve the historic resources of Salem, which are key to its identity, quality of life and economic vitality.

 

The Annual Meeting begins at 6:00 p.m. with a reception and light refreshments. Annual Meeting business will take place at 6:30, followed by the Preservation Awards presentation and lecture. The event takes place at the Salem Maritime Visitor Center; located at 2 New Liberty Street, in historic Salem, Mass. Parking can be found in the adjacent Museum Place garage.
