Feisty Storm Knocks Out Power to Thousands in Salem, Downs Trees and Wires

Wind gusts to 50 miles per hour caused downed trees and wires - and a large power outage - on Wednesday night.

A Nor’easter that has blown in gusty winds and rain is not giving up on Wednesday night, knocking out power to thousands of electric customers in Salem.

National Grid said 2,300 customers lost power at about 9:45 p.m. on Wednesday. The affected area included downtown, stretching to Bridge Street Neck, Collins Cove and Salem Willows.

Salem police described the outage area as “large” in a Facebook page.

National Grid was notified about the outage but did not give an estimate for when the power would be restored.

Police urged residents to call 911 only for emergencies and to call 978-744-1212 to report downed trees and wires.

Salem was not alone. Another 2,600 electric customers in Beverly were without power and close to 20,000 National Grid customers across the North Shore were without power on Wednesday night.
