Firefighters Extinguish Beacon Street Blaze

Salem fire officials have confirmed that one person died in a fire early Sunday morning on Beacon Street.

Firefighters from several North Shore communities battled a fatal fire that broke out in a multi-family home on Beacon Street early Sunday morning.

At 3:32 a.m., firefighters from Salem, Swampscott, Lynn and Nahant responded to a reported two-alarm structure fire at 5 Beacon St.

Salem Fire Chief David Cody said the blaze was confined to the second story of the brown, two-story house.

The death was confirmed by fire officials shortly after 9 a.m. The identity of the victim has not yet been released.

Investigators from the state Fire Marshal's Office were seen entering and exiting the house. The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.

A first floor tenant told an American Red Cross representative on scene that he awoke to the smell of smoke at about 3 a.m., called 911 and escaped from the building.

The fire did not result in any firefighter injuries, a fire official said.
