Firefighters Battle Bitter Cold At Overnight Salem Blaze
Beverly, Danvers crews helped Salem fire work the blaze in bone-chilling conditions on Broadway early Tuesday morning.
SALEM, MA — Salem, Beverly and Danvers fire crews combined to battle a three-alarm blaze in the brutal cold and whipping wind on Broadway in Salem early Tuesday morning.
Salem Firefighters Local 172 withstood winds up to 60 mph, single-digit temperatures in trying to knock down the fire at the 2.5-story, wood-framed, balloon construction home.
"Crews also had to (deal with the) challenge of a water main break that created low water pressure problems," Local 172 said. "Under the command of (Deputy Chief John) Payne, they were able to adapt and overcome these obstacles. ... Beverly and Danvers fire did a great job helping to knock down the fire."

It was a busy night in the bitter conditions on the North Shore with Salem Engine 4 also assisting Lynn in a two-alarm fire in that city.
"Outstanding work by the Salem firefighters, as well as responding personnel from Beverly (and Danvers), knocking down this three-alarm house at 99 Broadway last night, during extremely high winds," Salem Mayor Kim Driscoll posted on social media. "Grateful there were no injuries to residents or public safety personnel.
"Unfortunately, the house did not fare so well. Given last night's windy conditions, this fire could have easily spread. Nice work by SFD containing this blaze!"
