Former NY Governor Mario Cuomo Dies at 82

Cuomo was the featured speaker at Salem State's speaker series twice.

Former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo, who supporters wished would run for president in the 1980s and 1990s, has died at the age of 82.

Cuomo, who was known for his inspiring speeches, storytelling and turns of phrases, spoke at Salem State’s speaker series in 1988 and 1992.

Cuomo’s speech at Salem State in 1992 was at a time when the New York governor was one of the leading forces in the Democratic party. Cuomo enjoyed huge support to run for president, but the New Yorker never did run for president.

Cuomo’s 1992 speech was just after Bill Clinton had been elected president and Cuomo’s speech in Salem made national news as Cuomo officially closed the door on a future presidential run.

Cuomo died on Thursday, which was also his son Andrew’s first day of his second term as governor of New York.
