Get rid of your neck pain with these proven techniques!

Both acupuncture and the Alexander technique have been found to be effective in relieving chronic neck pain in a randomized study.

According to the Annals of Internal Medicine, chronic neck pain can be equally relieved with acupuncture or the Alexander technique. Study participants experienced both reduced pain and disability. Both approaches fared better than usual care.

Most people are familiar with the ancient proven practice of acupuncture to alleviate back pain, quit smoking, or reduce the level of pain during surgery. Fewer have heard of the Alexander technique.

F. M. Alexander, a trained Australian actor, who died in 1955 at the age of 85 years old, had suffered from chronic laryngitis. For years, he couldn’t get relief despite intense medical treatments. Alexander eventually discovered that his symptoms would significantly improve by moving a certain way when performing. He later started teaching correct posture and theatre skills like breathing and voice production.

The Alexander technique is a method taught by a trained teacher to improve movement, balance and coordination while releasing spinal tension. Through appropriate treatments and exercises, one learns how to accomplish daily activities without causing harm to the body.

The teacher will observe your posture while you walk, stand, or sit. She will gauge your body mechanics by placing her hands on your neck or shoulder and guide you through some exercises to release muscular tension. Lessons last thirty to forty-five minutes and can be taught individually or in group sessions.

Chronic neck pain may also cause headaches that prevent you from sleeping. Talk to your doctor to find out if either of these options may be appropriate for you.
