Illegal Gun Crackdown In Salem: Police Chief

Salem Police Chief Lucas Miller said there has been a "troubling" number of cases of illegal firearms possessions and use recently.

SALEM, MA — Salem Police Chief Lucas Miller is pledging a crackdown on illegal guns after what he said has been a "troubling number of cases involving the illegal possession and use of firearms" of late.

Miller said the department has investigated and made "some significant arrests" in several of those cases over the past "few weeks."

"While recent court decisions have had an impact on the issuing of firearm licenses, the possession and carrying of firearms and ammunition, without being properly licensed, is a felony and will be vigorously investigated by the Salem Police Department," Miller said.

Miller thanked residents for their help in identifying areas where illegal guns are being kept and, in some cases, used.

"The Salem Police Department could not successfully carry out our mission without the cooperation of the public," Miller said. "If you are aware of someone who possesses, carries, or threatens another person with an illegal firearm, we strongly encourage you to let us know.
