What? Explore how America’s first settlers built houses in Colonial Massachusetts. Find out what worked best, what failed and what these ingenious builders learned from their mistakes.

- Discover the building tools and the favored materials settlers used.
- Experiment with construction techniques at each of The Gables’ hands-on stations.
- Fold and decorate your own paper house to take home.
And if you want to learn more? Daily 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., join museum staff to explore “Why Do We Have Gables?” Learn which parts of historic buildings are the strongest. Kids will make shapes using hands and bodies in this fun, interactive program.
This special programming is part of visitors’ museum tickets, which also includes guided tours of The House of the Seven Gables and Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Birthplace as well as self-exploration of The Gables’ Kid’s Cove maritime history area.
Admission: Adults: $12.50, Seniors: $11.50, Children (5-12): $7.50 and children under 5 are admitted free of charge. Salem residents may visit free of charge, with proof of address.
