That Loud Noise In Salem Next Week Is "The Sound Of Progress"
Salem residents living near the Footprint Power Harbor Station will hear loud, sustained noise at some point in the next week. Here's why.

SALEM, MA -- Footprint Power Salem Harbor Station is entering the next phase of conversion from a coal-fired to gas-fired power plant, and it's going to get loud. The work being conducted over the course of the next week involves blowing high pressure steam through the pipe systems to ensure that all construction and welding debris is removed prior to putting the plant into operation. Despite silencers placed on as Turbine Number 6, "this is an inherently noisy activity" the utility said in a letter to neighbors.
"We appreciate your understanding this necessary step and assure you that the noise you will hear is not an indication that there is anything wrong," Footprint said. "Believe it or not, it is the sound of progress! These steam blows and the noise associated with them will NOT be a part of normal plant operations."
When conducted, the steam blows will last for 6 to 8 hours between the hours of 7 am and 8 pm.Traps and filters have been installed on the pipes so no debris is blown into the air. A similar schedule will be followed for Gas Turbine Number 5 later.
