Man Arrested After Burning No Trespass Order

Police arrested a Manchester-by-the-Sea man on Thursday night after police said he became violent when placed in protective custody.

A 22-year-old Manchester man is facing assault and disorderly conduct charges after burning a no trespass order from the Gulu Gulu Cafe on Thursday night.

Shortly after 10 p.m. on Thursday night, police were called to the Gulu Gulu for a report of an undesirable man at the Essex Street restaurant. The man had left by the time police arrived and officers searched the area for 20 minutes, but didn’t locate him.

Shortly after the search, police got a call that the man had returned to the restaurant.

When police came back, they served a no trespass order to Charles Sloan Swayze, 22, of Manchester-by-the-Sea.

As police left the restaurant, they said they saw Swayze in Lappin Park burning the no trespass order in front of a few disbelieving spectators. At this point, police determined that Swayze should be brought into the station for protective custody due to his intoxicated state.

During the booking process, police said Swayze became belligerent, swinging his arms and yelling in an officer’s face and starting to struggle with the officer.

At this point, Swayze was arrested and charged with assault and battery on a police officer, malicious destruction of property over $250, and disorderly conduct.
