Man Indicted in Connection with Murder of His Estranged Wife

According to police, Douglas Steeves confessed to the murder of his estranged wife in Salem on Aug. 2.

SALEM, MA — A man who police say admitted to strangling and killing his estranged wife was indicted by an Essex County Grand Jury on Wednesday, according to the Essex County District Attorney's office.

Douglas Steeves, 50, was indicted by an Essex County Grand Jury Wednesday on charges of murder and the violation of a restraining order in connection with the murder of his estranged wife Carmela Saunders, 48, of Salem. Saunders had obtained a restraining order against Steeves in May.

Steeves turned himself in to the Salem Police Station after police found Saunders dead at a home at 11 Chandler St, according to the District Attorneys office.

According to Steve O'Connell, a spokesman for the Essex County District Attorney's office, Steeves will be arraigned within the upcoming weeks in Salem Superior Court.
