Mass Shootings investigation and technology

Andy Raynor NH - In the aftermath of the horrific nightclub shooting in Orlando, the FBI and other Federal agencies have begun their investigation into the alleged shooter, Omar Saddiqui Mateen. What that usually involves is the normal groundwork like face to face investigations we are all familiar with. What is less well known and understood are the investigation tactics the FBI and other agencies undertake relative to technology.

Today photos were posted across the internet of FBI agents carrying what appear to be Omar Mateen's personal computers and various devices from the apartment complex he lived at. Depending on what device(s) is recovered from Mateen's apartment may set up another clash between the Justice Department and tech giant Apple, who has been a staunch supporter of encryption.

Andy Raynor NH - It doesn't matter if you support the Government or Apple in this debate, only know and understand that with every debate about this subject and every restriction on rights, or furtherance of government powers the terrorists win. They want the US Federal Government to react this way, to increase oversight and reduce citizen rights.

Although the death toll in Orlando is a terrible and horrific outcome, the most dastardly effect is the long term impact these attacks have on the relationship between the Government and ordinary citizens. We all know and understand that some rights need to be given up in the name of national security, however its clear that these terrorists are attempting to use the Government as a proxy against the people.

The sad part is, this approach is working, with the Trump rhetoric against a religion, to the FBI overreach with Apple and the erosion of other freedoms are becoming more and more evident each day.
