"The Narrow Edge: A Tiny Bird, An Ancient Crab, and an Epic Journey"

Presentation by Deborah Cramer, Gloucester resident and author of a book by the same name. Wednesday, April 27, 7 PM, Abbot Public Library

In this presentation, Deborah Cramer, author of a book by the same name, will tell the amazing story of a small species of shore bird, the Red Knot (a member of the sandpiper family), which flies 19,000 miles each yea -- from the tip of South America to its breeding grounds in the Arctic -- and back. Deborah followed these birds on their incredible journey, traveling thousands of miles, tracking them through mosquito-filled marshes, across remote areas and over snowy tundra. Along the way the birds, listed as a threatened species, refuel by feasting on the eggs of horseshoe crabs, a vulnerable species. Deborah will provide a first-hand, fascinating look at our fragile coastal ecosystem, how species are interconnected, and the impacts of climate change.

The book will be available for purchase and signing.

This is the final presentation in the "Under Water in Salem Sound" Lecture Series, co-sponsored by Salem Sound Coastwatch, a nonprofit environmental organization and Marblehead's Abbot Public Library. Free and open to the public.
