We are often encouraged to add more fiber to our diet. Dietary fiber has many benefits, from relieving constipation to decreasing the risk of heart disease. It also helps lower cholesterol.

The Institute of Medicine recommends 38 grams of fiber for men under 50 years old and 25 grams for women of the same age group. Men and women over 50 need a lesser amount, 30 and 21 grams respectively.

Fiber is found in whole grains, fruits, nuts, vegetables, and legumes.
