North Shore Officials React To Historic Inauguration

SALEM, MA — North Shore officials largely celebrated the history made and the tone of unity struck at the inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris Wednesday at Washington D.C.

Biden succeeded former President Donald Trump as the 46th president of the United States with the declaration: "We'll press forward with speed and urgency, for we have much to do in this winter of peril and significant possibilities, much to repair, much to restore, much to heal, much to build, and much to gain."

Harris became the first woman, first Black person and first person of South Asian descent to become vice president.

Salem Mayor Kim Driscoll also shared this Biden quote on Twitter:

U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton, who told Patch he holds former President Trump "100 percent responsible" the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol and voted to impeach Trump twice, shared a video of his view of the inauguration from the shadows of the Capitol steps.

"After four years of division and chaos, dignity and empathy have returned to the White House," Moulton said. "President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris will lead us out of the darkness of this moment, by bringing us together to fight the coronavirus pandemic and heal the soul of our nation.

"In the years ahead we will make historic progress and build a safer, stronger, more equitable country. I'm looking forward to all that lies ahead for America under the Biden-Harris Administration."

State Rep. Lori Ehrlich (D-Marblehead) and Rep. Paul Tucker (D-Salem) posted their admiration of National Youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman's inspired poem during the inauguration.
