Allen Richard Bates 81, of Salem, beloved husband of Muriel (Viel) Bates, died Tuesday evening, February 24th, 2015 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Bristol, Connecticut, he was the son of the late Alfred and Irene (Loomis) Bates. He was raised and educated in Connecticut.

An honorably discharged veteran, Mr. Bates, proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army.
Mr. Allen had been employed in the construction industry for many years until the time of his retirement.

A longtime resident of the City of Salem, Allen was a member of the Knights of Columbus #508 of Peabody. He enjoyed spending his time outdoors and loved to camp. He had a passion for animals especially his beloved canine companions. He will be deeply missed.
In addition to his loving wife Muriel, to whom he was married 50 years, Allen is survived by his daughter, Allison Hurley and her husband Michael of Ipswich, his two grandsons, Kyle and Brendon Hurley of Ipswich, his brother, Louren Bates of Florida, his sister Ruth Bates of Georgia, and several sister’s-in-law, nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Betty and Doris Bates.
ARRANGEMENTS: His funeral will be held from The O’Donnell Funeral Home, 46 Washington Sq., (at Salem Common) Salem, Friday, Feb. 27th at 10:15 A.M. followed by his Funeral Mass in Ste. Anne’s Church, Jefferson Ave., Salem at 11 A.M.. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours Thursday (Today), Feb. 26th from 4 to 7 P.M.. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in Allen’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
