Oct 17: Baroque Orchestra at Salem Athenaeum: The Crown of the Kingdom of Poland
Polish Baroque Music performed by a young Baroque orchestra from Europe, Il Giardino d'Amore, combined with Cambridge Concentus
On Oct 17, at the Salem Athenaeum, the Cambridge Society for Early Music will present a concert of rare Baroque music of Poland: “The Crown of the Kingdom of Poland: 250 Year of Polish Music, 1500-1750.” Stefan Plewniak, a lively young Polish violinist who lives in Vienna, is bringing his baroque orchestra, Il Giardino d’Amore, from Europe for a set of five concerts around Boston. They are joined by Cambridge Concentus, directed by trumpeter David Kjar. There will be fifteen musicians: strings, lute, guitar, harpsichord, trumpets, and four singers. Polish music is terra incognita for most of us, so we need a charming guide. No one is more suited to lead us on this journey than Stefan Plewniak. Most of the music is a varied assortment of treasures from the 17th century, including works of H. I. von Biber and Fux in addition to the Polish masters. The climax of the concert will be jubilant works by the leading Polish composer of the high Baroque, G.G. Gorszecki, overflowing with good-natured melodies.
